Memorial José Gabriel da Costa
The José Gabriel da Costa Memorial meets the need of the União do Vegetal brotherhood to preserve the history of the life and work of Mestre Gabriel. The project includes the construction of a replica of the house where the Master lived with his family, as well as spaces for social interaction and permanent and thematic exhibition areas.
The objective is to provide information to members, authorities, and researchers, contributing to the institutional recognition of União do Vegetal.
Memorial Structure
In addition to the replica of the house — which served for some years as the UDV headquarters — the Memorial will include:
Study center with meeting and projection rooms
Archive rooms (CDs, videos, tapes, photos, and testimonies)
Library
Infrastructure with pantry and restrooms
Auditorium for lectures, workshops, and video screenings
It will be a space intended for all those interested in learning more about the life and work of Mestre Gabriel, an example of humility and simplicity, demonstrating that this is the most direct path to reaching God.
Project Concept
The Memorial will consist of two spaces, built at different times, maintaining a simple proposal both in architecture and in historical narrative.
The proposal is to portray the journey of a man who migrated from the Northeast to the Amazon as a rubber soldier, his experience as a forest caboclo, the creation of União do Vegetal, and its expansion to the present day.
There will be a setting that reflects both past and present, faithfully preserving the essence of each phase.
Implementation
At the front of the land, the replica of Mestre Gabriel’s house will be built, set back 8 meters from the sidewalk — complying with building regulations and allowing its use as parking.
At the rear, a modern three-story building will be constructed.
